PREŠOV (Prešov, 250 m) is one of the most influential cities of Slovakia as far as history is concerned. It is situated upon the Torysa river, at the junction of roads connecting the Tatra Mountains, Poprad and Lewocza with Bardejov, as well as the Pieniny with Stara Lubowla and Koszyce. The origins of Prešov date back to the 17th century. Important trade routes crossed the city which was inhabited by Slovaks, Hungarians and Germans. After the World War II a rapid industrial growth took place, and now Prešov is third largest city of Slovakia.
The centre of the city is a large square with colourful tenements. In the southern part of the square there is a Greek Catholic cathedral, and the Town Hall in the centre. Within the area of the square there are also two churches: one of them, huge and much more splendid, is a 14th century St. Nicolas Catholic church with superb stained glass windows and altar; the other, located more to the north, is a 17th century Protestant church the history of which refers to the influence of the Reformation on these lands.
The program of the tour includes:
Museum of wine in the basement of Prešov.
A display of a wide selection of wines from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and all over the world, as well as tools and machines for wine production;
St. John the Baptist Greek Catholic Cathedral, constructed in Gothic style in place of a hospital functioning there since 1429 and Virgin Mary Carmelite church. Since the second half of the 17th century used by Slovak evangelicals. Its Gothic building was rebuilt into baroque style between 1753-54. In 1818 the Pope Pius VII founded a Greek Catholic church diocese in Prešov and assigned the church to it. In 1848 the façade of the church was rebuilt in classical style. Next to the building, there is a Renaissance building of the Bishops' Palace. After 1950 the church was temporarily used by Orthodox believers. The chancel inside has Gothic ceilings, rococo polychrome from the 18th century, and the iconostasis in front of the main altar - from the beginnings of the 20th century.
