The town and district of Stary Sącz - the oldest town of the Sądecczyzna, a member of the Chapter of the Oldest Cities in Poland, entered by the Minister of Culture and Art into the list of town and cities of outstanding importance to Polish culture - is situated at the confluence of two largest rivers of southern Lesser Poland: Dunajec and Poprad.

Nowy Sącz - a poviat city located in the centre of Kotlina Sądecka (Sądecka Valley), among Beskid Sądecki mountain range in the main range of the Carpathians, in the bifurcation of two main rivers: Dunajec and Kamienica Nawojowska.

The city constitutes a considerable section of Carpathian ecological space. The location at the bottom of Kotlina Sądecka, protected by the Beskidy is, due to neighbouring vast mountainous areas, a rich source of biological power.
